People running in the Chicago Marathon in Chicago, Illinois

Chicago has had several hot, humid days recently, and there are likely more on the way. As you exercise, train, and participate in events in this type of weather, it is important to follow some basic tips, be aware of how your body is reacting, and respond accordingly. Here are some hot-weather training tips:

  • Hydrate before, during, and after your workout.
  • Wear light-colored, lightweight, breathable clothing.
  • Exercise during the coolest part of the day (usually early morning or evening).
  • Take the heat index, air quality index, and related alerts into consideration before exercising outside.
  • Use sunscreen.
  • Wear sunglasses that provide 100% UV protection.
  • Slow down. Don't expect to maintain the same pace you keep during cool-weather workouts.
  • Know the warning signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website has an excellent page discussing heat-related illnesses.
  • Exercise with a workout partner or tell someone when you will return from your workout.

Have a great, and safe, summer workout season!
